Two testing grounds, one shared standard

Nothing gets recommended on TheVacuumHub that we haven’t run ourselves. We buy or borrow every unit we review — no manufacturer sends us a vacuum in exchange for a review, and no sponsorship is accepted before a review is written.

Laura’s testing lens

How Mohamed tests, step by step

  1. Property intake: notes the condition of each flat before starting a cleanup — flooring type, visible buildup, and any obvious problem areas — giving a real baseline before the vacuum touches the floor.
  2. First pass on neglected surfaces: runs the vacuum on carpet and flooring that hasn’t been properly cleaned in months, the exact condition his cleanup jobs start from.
  3. Cross-property comparison: because he moves between multiple flats in the same week, he can compare how the same machine performs on old carpet in one property versus hardwood or tile in another.
  4. Fine debris from painting work: tests whether a vacuum’s filtration holds up under debris finer than typical household dirt.
  5. Repeat-use durability: assesses wear and performance consistency across back-to-back jobs, not a single test run.

Laura’s 5-minute home test

This is the exact process Laura uses before recommending any vacuum, taken directly from her Fine Dust & Allergen Vacuum Checklist:

  1. Run it, then check the exhaust. Hold a clean tissue or dark cloth near the exhaust vent while it’s running. Fine dust on it means air is escaping unfiltered.
  2. Vacuum a small pile of flour or fine dust on a dark floor. Check the surrounding floor and air afterward — genuine sealed filtration won’t leave a haze behind.
  3. Watch what happens when you open the bin. A visible dust cloud on opening means the seal isn’t doing its job where it matters most.

HEPA seal red flags we check for

  • “HEPA-type” or “HEPA-style” wording — only “True HEPA” or “Sealed HEPA” meets the actual filtration standard.
  • No mention of a sealed system — a HEPA filter only works if air is forced through it.
  • A filter that isn’t washable or easily replaceable.
  • No stated filter replacement interval.
