Robot Vacuum Maintenance: Brushes, Sensors, and Bins

A robot vacuum that runs daily accumulates wear faster than a machine you push around once a week, and the maintenance it needs is easy to overlook precisely because it’s out of sight, working on its own schedule in another room.

Brushes: The Most Frequent Job

The main brush roll and the side brush (on models that have one) are where hair and fiber accumulate fastest, especially with pets or long hair in the household. A main brush wound tight with hair loses agitation efficiency and puts extra strain on the motor. Check it weekly if you have pets, every two weeks otherwise — most models have a tool-free release specifically for this.

Sensors Need to Stay Clean to Work at All

Cliff sensors (which stop the robot from falling down stairs), and navigation sensors on higher-end models, are usually small optical components on the underside or front of the machine. Dust buildup over these sensors can cause erratic navigation, false stops, or in worse cases, a robot that doesn’t detect a drop-off the way it’s supposed to. A quick wipe with a dry cloth every couple of weeks keeps them working as intended.

The Bin: Small, and Easy to Forget

Robot vacuum bins are considerably smaller than full-size machines, and even models with self-emptying base stations still have their own smaller onboard bin that needs periodic attention — usually the filter compartment specifically, since dust can accumulate around the seal even when the main collection happens elsewhere. Empty non-self-emptying models after every run rather than waiting for a full bin, since a partially packed bin can restrict airflow well before it looks full.

Wheels and the Underside

Hair and debris can wrap around the caster wheels and drive wheels too, not just the brush roll, and this is one of the more common causes of a robot vacuum that seems to be losing traction or drifting off its intended path. A monthly check of the underside — wheels included, not just the brush — catches this before it becomes a navigation problem.

The Charging Contacts

Dust builds up on the metal charging contacts on both the robot and the dock over time, which can prevent a full, reliable charge even when the robot appears to be docked correctly. Wiping both sets of contacts with a dry cloth every few weeks avoids the frustrating scenario of a robot that docks successfully but doesn’t actually charge.

A Simple Maintenance Schedule

  • After every run (non-self-emptying models): empty the bin.
  • Weekly: check the main brush and side brush for wrapped hair.
  • Every two weeks: wipe sensors and charging contacts.
  • Monthly: check wheels and the underside for debris buildup.

Why does my robot vacuum keep missing spots it used to clean fine?

Often a sensor or wheel issue rather than a mapping problem — dust on navigation sensors or debris wrapped around a wheel can both cause a robot to behave as if it’s avoiding an area it should be cleaning.

How do I know if the charging contacts need cleaning?

If the robot docks but the battery indicator doesn’t show it charging, or charging takes noticeably longer than usual, dirty contacts are one of the first things to check.

Is it normal for hair to wrap around the side brush too, not just the main brush?

Yes, particularly on models with a spinning side brush designed to sweep debris in from edges — it’s just as prone to wrapping as the main roll, and often gets checked less often simply because it’s smaller and less obvious.
